The formative influence of Frédéric Chopin on the music of other composers is often noted, usually in connection with the solo keyboard pieces of Sergey Rachmaninov and Alexander Scriabin, perhaps the two figures who benefitted most from studying Chopin's style and methods. But they were late Romantics who appeared at the end of a long line of musicians who fell under Chopin's spell, and the list contains many other familiar names, including Edvard Grieg, Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, Mily Balakirev, Ferruccio Busoni, and Leopold Godowsky. Modern composers also turned to Chopin for inspiration, such as Arthur Honegger, Lennox Berkeley, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Federico Mompou, though with them the Romantic style takes on an arch quality with the addition of dissonances and irregular rhythms, yet the spirit of the original source still shines through. This collection of short tributes and pastiches, played by Jonathan Plowright, was recorded in 2009, but its release in 2010 coincided with the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth. Considering that it appeared among numerous Chopin releases and reissues for the occasion, there was a risk that it could have been missed in the onslaught. But Plowright's idiomatic and expressive playing and the creativity of these hommages make this a worthwhile disc to hear at least once, if only to become aware of the various ways Chopin's legacy continued after his death.
